Tipping and Wages in Bali

Tipping and Wages

Tipping: Not usual except for porters and at high class hotels & restaurants. Service tax is often added to bill. Waiting staff are poorly paid, tips of 2,000-3,000 Rp are acceptable for good service.

Wages: The average per capita annual income for Indonesians is US$900. An Ubud waitress makes less than 1 million rupees per month (600,000 to 800,000)

Thanks to Shelley, I now have the following to add (she was in Bali in 2006):

Hotel Staff:
4 star hotel (Bali Hai) in Tuban:
1 million rupiah per month (junior staff 600,000 rupiah pm) with paid holidays and sick pay.

Waiting Staff:
600,000 rupiah per month.

Matahari Staff:
She was also told that the government set the wages for workers in places like the Matahari department stores and the girls that worked on the floor there got a set wage of 600,000 rupiah per month.

(I would love to get a hold of more examples of what Bali people get for wages if anyone out there has accurate info? Please contact me.)
