Need International Licence (acquire in your own country first)

I saw lots of tourists renting scooters/motorbikes, and a few with very shocking injuries. It's about 50,000Rp a day if you don't bargain.

You will get hassled by the corrupt police and will have give them money to avoid being locked up. The guy's I spoke with who rented, got hassled by the police nearly everyday, and nearly everyday they would have to pay about 200,000Rp, so if you think about it, unless you are extremely lucky and you go undetected, it costs more to hire your own transport than to hire a driver.

Ok, so besides the benefits of it being cheaper to hire a driver, less hassle with the police, and the shocking injuries.. if you are still considering car rental, let me give you one more pre-warning...
... NOTHING, not even the best defensive driving course in the world, can prepare you for driving in Bali. It's dangerous, it's terrifying, and it's scary.. did I mention terrifying? You don't stop at round-a-abouts, you just barge your way through, there is a family of 5 riding unsafely side-saddled on motorcycles next to you, the other motorcycle on your left just used your car as an alternative to their brakes, the car behind you is tooting at you to run over the person in front... it's absolutely crazy out there! You see accident after accident every other day and noone batters an eyelid. And it can only get worse, more and more cars and bikes are coming on the road every day, and the roads are simply not designed for that much traffic.

Still not convinced? How about this.. if you have an accident in Bali.. and you are a foreigner.. YOU are at Fault, even if it's not your fault .. it's STILL your fault.. they explained it to me like this.. you are a foreigner, if you hadn't of been driving in their country.. the accident wouldn't of happened, but I also heard another similar explanation.. you are a rich foreigner and can afford it, and they are the poor native. And it's custom that if a car and a motorcycle is involved in an accident, the car pays because he is richer than the motorcycle rider. Remember, the police are natives.
