Bali Accommodation
- Kuta Budget Accommodation
Kuta, the main tourist place in Bali, has some great budget accommodation for travellers. I could easily find a room for less than AUD$7 a night in the heart of Kuta.
- Ubud Budget Accommodation
Ubud, the quiet Bali, is really, really cheap! You can really step up a notch in Ubud if you want, or be like me, and keep staying in cheap but clean accommodation :)

Cheapest Accommodation in Bali
A Losmen = small hotel, usually family run, rarely more than 10 rooms and is aka "homestay" or "Inn" and a Wisma = smaller place, like a guesthouse (& Bungalow).. a bit more expensive than Losmen. Just about any budget-range place can be called a Losmen. Some rooms are as low as 20,000Rp ($3) in some places, but generally 25-35,000Rp ($6) with popular locations being about 50-80,000Rp ($8-$13).
Mid-range Hotels Rooms = 90-225,000 Rp ($15-$35) incl breakfast, fan, bathroom, shower, and toilet - no air conditioning Check-in/Check-out Times in most cases is 12 noon. On check-in, guests will be required to establish credit (a room deposit) for incidental charges. A refundable deposit or a major credit card imprint will be required.

My Story about Accommodation:
I stayed in all sorts of budget places, from free places (via websites on the internet.. travel exchange type of programs) to places that never get cleaned and places that are absolutely fantastic considering the price & location.
My favourite place was in the centre of Kuta on top of the Aquarius hotel, it was cheap, clean, had hot water and breakfast and you couldn't fault the location of the place.
The picture above with the blue/green pool is the Flora Beach hotel, I liked it there too... air conditioned, etc, but not as cheap and I wanted cheap, so it was great to stay there for my first 5 days of Bali while I got used to the culture and climate and got my bearings, but then I decided to get more adventurous. I also found the guests in the cheaper places to be much more friendly and easy going than those at the more expensive places.
My recommendation for accommodation is, unless you are taking your family, you should book your first day or two in a hotel before you go (perhaps with a recommendation from whoever sold you the flight ticket), then wait until you get there before you bargain for accommodation, you'll get it heaps cheaper in person than on the internet and you get the added bonus of actually having a look at the rooms before you 'move in' :)
Regarding the free accommodation over there, there were only 2 offering free accommodation on the internet before I left, and since both of them are my friends, I can tell you that one has moved to Jakarta, and the other is renovating, so unfortunately you can't take up the offer of living with a local unless you can find another place that does it. You should become members of hospitality clubs though because you never know where you can stay, and it's so great being able to touch base with a trustworthy local over there that can show you the ropes and explain things to you for hours hehe.
